RESUMEN

Central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma is a rare and aggressive primary neoplasm that comprises a small proportion of brain tumours and non-Hodgkin lymphomas. We present a case report of a 64-year-old woman with CNS lymphoma, who exhibited cognitive changes, weight loss and neurological symptoms. Imaging scans revealed multiple lesions in the brain and thrombosis in the venous sinuses. A diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the CNS was confirmed through histological examination. The patient underwent treatment with corticosteroids and chemotherapy, but experienced clinical deterioration with thrombocytopenia and disease progression. Despite efforts to manage complications and provide targeted therapy, the patient passed away. Primary CNS lymphoma typically responds well to chemotherapy, and prognostic factors such as age and functional status play a significant role in patient outcomes. However, complications such as thromboembolism pose challenges during treatment due to the hypercoagulable state induced by chemotherapy agents. The pathophysiology of thromboembolic events in the context of malignancy remains uncertain but may involve direct tumour compression, vascular invasion and alterations in coagulation factors. The diagnostic process for CNS lymphoma can be complex, and the information obtained from cerebrospinal fluid analysis, including flow cytometry, may be limited in cases with low cell counts. Ongoing research exploring genetic tests and biomarkers shows promise for improving diagnostic accuracy in such cases. This case underscores the need for comprehensive management strategies that address both the neoplasm and its associated complications, to optimise patient outcomes. LEARNING POINTS: Primary CNS lymphoma is a rare primary neoplasm, being even rarer in immunocompetent patients. In 25% of all cases of CNS lymphoma, it is complicated by cerebral venous thromboembolism.Leptomeningeal spread can occur with or without MRI evidence and is diagnosed with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow cytometry. Age and functional status are important prognostic factors.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Emotional intelligence is often described as the ability to know own emotions and to be aware of other emotions. The emotional intelligence of critical care nurses is a necessary competence for work performance. The aim of this review is to map the evidence on emotional intelligence of nurses working in this specific context. METHODS: Scoping review based on Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance. Nurses as a population (P), critical care as a context (C) and emotional intelligence as a concept (C) were considered. Search was conducted using databases and electronic platforms such as CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE complete, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive (via EBSCOhost), MedLine (via PubMed), SCOPUS and Web of Science. From a total of 40 citations, nine articles have been included in the review. RESULTS: The 9 articles emphasise the relevance of emotional intelligence in the professional experience, in emotional exhaustion and burnout prevention, in enhancing the safety culture of the sick, in contributing to organisational citizenship behaviour, and in resilience. CONCLUSION: Emotional intelligence is a core competency of critical care nurses, with professional, personal and organisational implications.

RESUMEN

Background: Infection due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with clinical features of diverse severity. Few studies investigated the severity and mortality predictors of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Africa. Herein, we investigated the clinical features of severity and mortality among COVID-19 patients in Luanda, Angola. Methods: This multicenter cohort study involved 101 COVID-19 patients, between December 2020 and April 2021, with clinical and laboratory data collected. Analysis was done using independent-sample t-tests and Chi-square tests. The results were deemed significant when p < 0.05. Results: The mean age of patients was 51 years (ranging from 18 to 80 years) and 60.4% were male. Fever (46%), cough (47%), gastrointestinal symptoms (26.7%), and asthenia (26.7%), were the most common symptoms. About 64.4% of the patients presented coexistent disorders, including hypertension (42%), diabetes (17%), and chronic renal diseases (6%). About 23% were non-severe, 77% were severe, and 10% died during hospitalization. Variations in the concentration of neutrophil, urea, creatinine, c-reactive protein, sodium, creatine kinase, and chloride were independently associated with severity and/or mortality (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Several factors contributed to the severity and mortality among COVID-19 patients in Angola. Further studies related to clinical features should be carried out to help clinical decision-making and follow-up of COVID-19 patients in Angola.

RESUMEN

SARS-CoV-2 emerged in China in December 2019, creating a massive public health concern. Although previous studies have identified SARS-CoV-2 in pregnant women, the possibility of transmission to newborns remains uncertain. Herein, we investigated SARS-CoV-2 infection and risk factors among parturients and newborns. This was a cross-sectional study carried out with 3633 parturients from Luanda, Angola, between January and April 2021, with an age ranging from 13 to 48 years. SARS-CoV-2 infection of the parturients was further confirmed with RT-PCR after COVID-19 Ag Rapid Testing. About 0.4% of parturients tested positive on the day of delivery. Surprisingly, parturients from urbanized areas (OR: 0.18, p = 0.025) had a low chance of infection. None of the newborns tested positive in the first 24 h after birth, while one (9.1%, 1/10) of the newborns tested positive with pharyngeal swabs seven days after birth. However, whether the case was due to vertical transmission from mother to child remains to be confirmed. The mother's residence, education level, antenatal follow-up, and delivery category were related to SARS-CoV-2 transmission (p < 0.05). Our findings showed a relatively low SARS-CoV-2 infection from parturients to newborns, regardless of the severity of the maternal disease. Furthermore, these findings are an early assessment of COVID-19 cases in late pregnancy, which could indicate the need for intensive management of SARS-CoV-2 infection among parturients in Angola. Further studies are needed on the consequences of SARS-CoV-2 among pregnant women and neonates from Angola.

Objective: To identify complications arising from the use of body piercing (oral and perioral) in a population of young adults. Methodology: Descriptive research, of the cross-sectional type, through the collection of primary data. The target population consisted of adults from three cities in the state of Santa Catarina (SC), and the inclusion criteria were: age 18 or over, and user or former user of a body piercing. The sample was of the accidental, non-probabilistic type. The research subjects were interviewed in public places. Results: 103 completed questionnaires were returned. The sample was comprised of 50.5% male subjects, and 49.5% females, with ages ranging from 18 to 32 years. The majority (70%) stated that they had not noticed any kind of change after having their body piercing done. Of those who identified some type of change (n=32), the majority were part of the former user group. The main changes mentioned were: changes in speech, chewing and swallowing; damaged teeth; pain and swelling; and inflammation. Conclusion: Piercing is a form of intraoral injury, therefore it is necessary to ensure that information on care in relation to the use of this adornment is widespread, to minimize possible complications.
